Do you love classical music but want to get more out of your listening experience? Do you ever wonder how music is structured or what inspired composers? Or are you simply curious to know more? We are delighted to offer a new way to learn about the music performed at our concerts so you can enjoy it on a whole new level.
Music Unveiled is a new Guided Listening initiative presented at Galway’s city libraries (Ballybane, City, Westside) in partnership with University of Galway’s Music Department and Galway City Council Arts Office. The initiative is paired with our Lunchtime with ConTempo series and provides you with the opportunity to learn about the music that will be performed ahead of time.
One week before each concert, Music Unveiled will deconstruct some of the featured Lunchtime with ConTempo repertoire, empowering you to understand its structure, inspiration and context, as well as the performers’ interaction with the work and composer. The sessions will be led by Head of Music at University of Galway, Dr Aidan Thomson, with inputs by featured contemporary composers and live demonstrations by ConTempo Quartet. Following these Music Unveiled sessions, you will be able to listen deeply, more confidently and experience greater meaning at our Lunchtime with ConTempo concerts.
The series begins on January 28th at 11am in Ballybane Library when the Music Unveiled team will be exploring Haydn’s Frog Quartet and Judith Ring’s ‘Of Wood and Water’, two works featured on our World Wetlands Day programme (which will be performed at Lunchtime with ConTempo on Tuesday 4th February, 1:10pm). The session is free but booking is required through Ballybane Library (ballybane@galwaylibrary.ie / 091-509244).
Music Unveiled is free, inclusive and accessible. The Music Unveiled sessions will be filmed and made available on our YouTube channel for those who can’t make it in person. Booking for Music Unveiled is required through the relevant libraries. The series is funded by Galway City Council Arts Office.
